A Garage Door Maintenance Checklist for Every Season

The cheapest garage door repair is the one you never need. A little routine maintenance keeps the door quiet, safe, and reliable — and catches small problems before they become expensive ones. Here's a simple checklist you can run a few times a year.

Listen and watch. Open and close the door a few times. Grinding, scraping, or jerky movement is your early-warning system.

Tighten the hardware. Vibration loosens bolts and brackets over time. Snug up the roller brackets and track fasteners (don't overtighten).

Lubricate moving parts. A garage-door-specific lubricant on the rollers, hinges, and springs makes a big difference in noise and wear. Avoid heavy grease, which attracts grime.

Test the balance. Pull the release and lift the door halfway by hand. It should mostly stay put. If it drops or rises, the springs need adjustment — a job for a pro.

Test the safety reverse. Place a roll of paper towels under the door and close it. It should reverse on contact. If it doesn't, stop using the door and call us.

Check the weather seal. A cracked bottom seal lets in cold, water, and pests. Replacing it is cheap and quick.
